Barely-there dressing
No red carpet event without transparent dresses. The 'naked dress' or 'nude dress' has been a huge hit for years: dresses that leave nothing to the imagination. Yet making such a revealing creation is a lot of work: naked dresses are often made of wafer-thin, fragile fabrics and must look as if they stick to the body. Technically a major challenge for designers. It was Marilyn Monroe who made her first public appearance in 1962 in a 'naked dress  during her sultry performance of Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy. It was a so-called 'illusion dress' by designer Jean Louis, studded with 2,500 rhinestones. The dress was said to be so tight that she allowed herself to be sewn into it without underwear. It became one of the most iconic dresses of all time – and when Kim Kardashian wore the extremely fragile museum piece again at the Met Gala in 2022, it sparked public outrage.
