Fantasy bag
Bags
Conversation piece
A handbag shaped like a book, accordion, champagne cooler, telephone or the Titanic: fantasy bags are especially designed for fun. Unusual materials, bizarre shapes and smart closures turn these experimental designs into true conversation pieces. A small purse in the form of a jumping frog with two beads as eyelets from the Museum of London collection proves that fantasy bags were already made in the seventeenth century. During the 1920’s young women wore their party accessories or cigarettes in porcelain dolls or furry dogs. But the golden age of the fantasy bag came in the 1930s when ironic bags were inspired by surrealism. A trend set by Elsa Schiaparelli with her birdcage and newspaper bag.
