Health insurance glasses

Glasses

No frills
Contrary to popular belief, John Lennon wore more than one type of glasses, though he is undoubtedly most famous for the round metal frames of the British National Health Service (NHS). These were subsidized by taxpayers. In the Netherlands, the health insurance fund used to provide reading glasses to policyholders as well. There was only one model: completely round, nickel frames. Flexible, sturdy, and without any frills. Those who preferred a fashionable butterfly frame, for example, had to pay extra. The Eyewear Museum in Amsterdam still sells antique hospital glasses: these frames, handcrafted from nickel between 1900 and 1920, feature curled temples on the sides.
