Benefits for the brain
These traditional Japanese socks have a split between the big toe and the other toes. This allows them to be worn in combination with zori slippers or wooden geta. The big toe separation is said to have health benefits, as bending the big toe both relaxes and stimulates the brain. Tabi have been worn by men and women since the fifteenth century. The Belgian designer Martin Margiela was inspired by these age-old socks in 1988 for his iconic Tabi boot. Since then, the tabis have become an indispensable part of the fashion world. Prada's Japanese collection for summer 2013 also featured all kinds of tabi-sock-inspired shoes.
