Ajour pattern

For advanced users
Ajour means 'open work' and is therefore a collective name for all textiles with a refined hole pattern. For example, a knit or weave with small decorative openings that allow light to pass through. Although originally a needlework stitch, the ajour or lace stitch can now also be made by machine. A garment knitted with an ajour pattern is elastic thanks to the holes. This type of stitch is therefore often used in socks, stockings, airy summer sweaters and shawls. Knitting books and craft blogs describe many different ajour patterns and techniques. Reading ajour patterns does require some knitting experience though.
