The third eye
A spot between the eyebrows, it’s nothing more than that. However, the bindi has a powerful meaning: this form of body decoration symbolizes the spiritual third eye or ajna, the brow chakra. The traditional decoration is worn by Hindu women as a symbol of a prosperous marriage and protection. Vermilion powder, ground saffron with kusumba flower, sindoor or kumkum is applied to the fingertip. Women with crooked fingers use special pads to thereby stamping a perfectly round dot. The name is derived from bindu, which means ‘drop’ in Sanskrit. Although originally vermilion, there are now also colorful body sticker bindi that are also worn by non-Hindus in South Asia and during festivals.
