Monokini
Swimwear
Topless, or not?
In 1964, Austrian Rudi Gernreich designed the monokini in the United States, consisting of short, form-fitting bottoms with two strings around the neck – the first topless women's swimsuit. The controversial design appears in Look Magazine in June 1964, worn by an anonymous model, with her back turned to the camera. Later that month, another publication in Women's Wear Daily will follow in which the breasts of the model – the iconic Peggy Moffitt – are visible. Today, the term monokini refers to a type of bikini in which the top and bottom are connected by a narrow strip of fabric. A sexy version of the bathing suit, with cut-outs on the side.
