Tree of life
There is much speculation about the origin of the boteh motif, more commonly known as 'paisley'. The pattern probably originates from ancient Babylon. There, the teardrop shape depicted the growing graft of a date palm. A palm species that is seen throughout the Middle East as the 'tree of life' because of its good properties. Cashmere shawls with boteh motifs have long been very popular as precious fashion accessories for women. In Europe, Persian designs were frequently imitated and dresses were also made from cashmere fabrics. The boteh motif can be displayed in endless ways with subtle variations.
